Awkward things during reading a book about Virginia Woolf and her servants
- The angle my back was on since I threw away my pillow
- Eating a mango — horrors of the flesh, anyone?
- Realising that I was really kind of bored by a lot of the details of working class life
- Having to get up to make my own tea
- Lost bookmark
- Wondering whether I, like her, will be highly dependent on others well into adulthood
- Recalling how racist someone I so much like and admire as an historical figure is (it isn’t grounds for dislike, given historical context, but still jarring)
- A conversation I had with my father
- Break required mid interesting section to get my floors cleared for the cleaners
- My irony
Reasons I am learning German
- To be able to read Goethe’s Faust untranslated. Also to try Kant in the original
- Constructive use of transport-time seeming like a nice idea
- Incredible compound-words
- I approve of and appreciate the capitalisation of nouns
- “Rache”
- New vocabulary for the maladies of my youth
- “Trotz”
- Umlauts! Four extra letters!
- Me speaking German = possibly kinda hot
- It seems a difficult language to be flippant in, and may thus improve the tone of my mind
problems with infinite jest
1. it’s very good, so good that it is sad, because i won’t be that good ever.
2. it’s too heavy to take with me
3. i look pretentious reading it in public
4. number of friends is diminishing because i only want to know people who have read infinite jest.
5. i saw another copy in a second hand book store and thought about buying it because i think mine might fall apart over the course of me reading it for so long
6. i keep quoting it to people who don’t know it and i don’t care
7. it has given me unrealistic expectations of the quality of novels,
8. it has also put me off ever writing a novel because i can’t reach those expectations
9. “…”
10. i feel unnecessarily compelled to footnote this list
Things one might bury:
